Preheat the
oven to 350° F. Grease an 8-inch square
baking pan.
Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking
soda, and salt into a large bowl. In a medium bowl,
whisk the melted butter, buttermilk, and sugar until
smooth. Blend in the eggs and vanilla. Pour the
liquid mixture over the dry ingredients and mix with
a rubber spatula until thoroughly combined. Stir in
the chocolate chips and apples and spoon into the
prepared pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until a tester
comes out clean (check in several places as the
chocolate chips will be moist when the cake is
done).
Meanwhile, stir the water and sugar in a bowl until
dissolved. When the cake is removed from the oven,
leave in pan and place on a wire rack. Pierce the
top in several places with a cocktail stick. Restir
the sugar glaze and slowly drizzle over the cake.
All to set for 15 minutes, turn out onto rack and
cool completely.
